“I always had the dream of making a movie for the big screen,” actor Sivakarthikeyan once said, talking about his acting dreams when he was still a TV personality. One of his biggest hits, Doctor, was directed by Nelson Dhilipkumar, a colleague he had worked with even during his TV stint.
In his career spanning more than a decade, Sivakarthikeyan has had many highs like the super-successful Doctor. An ordinary guy like everyone else, he comes with no background. A shy person before fame embraced him, he used to see the world from his father’s shoulders. Since he came from a middle-class family, he boasted no assets and no bank balance. And no fear of what tomorrow would bring. His father was his biggest source of strength.
When his father passed away when he was just 17, emptiness took over. Adversity was inevitable. There weren’t even people to talk about them. Even relatives stopped visiting, fearing they might be asked for money. His sister, Gauri Manohari, took over the family’s responsibility. She stood by Sivakarthikeyan like a fatherly figure. She secured an MBBS seat in a government college. And with great difficulty, got Sivakarthikeyan admitted to an Engineering college. Both of them, while studying, used to do small jobs.
The future hero started closely observing those who worked with him and started imitating them. Imitation is how many actors began their creative journies. No one thought that the art that started as fun would change his life that day. Mimicry and stand-up comedy shows in college and outside helped Sivakarthikeyan hone his skills. He used to win and bring a lot of medals.
Seeing Siva’s talent, his friends used to encourage him to try in movies. With their encouragement, he participated in a TV comedy show and won. A dance reality show followed. He later turned into a host.
Acquaintance with Atlee helped him in his early days. A short film made by the duo was a super-hit. An Ajith film was one such. Although he acted in the movie, his portions didn’t make it to the final cut. Siva broke into tears when he watched the movie without his portions in it. He firmly resolved to draw audience whistles in the same hall where he cried.
Marina, directed by Pandiraj, changed things for him. It won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award. Since then, he has earned the love of lakhs of fans. Out of the 21 films he acted in as a hero, 18 films were hits, super hits, blockbusters. Doctor and Don collected Rs 100 crores. Amaran collected a whopping Rs 335 crores. It stood in the eighth place in the worldwide all-time highest grossing and sixth place in Tamil Nadu.
Remo, Mahaveerudu, Ayalaan, Kausalya Krishnamurthy, Hero, Prince, Doctor, and Amaran are proof that Siva is capable of versatility. As a singer, he has rendered 11 songs. As a lyricist, he has 10 songs to his credit. As a producer, he has 7 movies in his filmography. In this 13-year journey as an actor, he has won 13 awards.
