Director Sekhar Kammula speaks about Kuberaa

“The core point of Kuberaa is a wide-ranging one. It eventually evolved into an emotional thriller,” says Sekhar Kammula, talking about his next theatrical release. Set to be released in theatres on June 20th, the bilingual film pits a beggar against a multi-billionaire. The acclaimed director elaborates that the film is about a beggar (Dhanush) who doesn’t desire anything and a super-rich guy (Jim Sarbh) whose avarice is bottomless.

The film was separately shot in Telugu and Tamil. While each scene is common to both, the overall run-time is only mildly different. “Technically speaking, we filmed two movies at a time,” the Anand and Fidaa director says.

Nagarjuna was chosen because he was apt for the character Deepak. “Usually, there is a certain wow factor when he is on the screen. For Kuberaa, he was specifically cast to explore a new dimension of his performance,” Kammula ponders, adding that the Bangarraju actor will be as refreshing as he was in Oopiri and Manam.

Calling Dhanush a single-take actor, the Love Story director certifies that nobody else could have portrayed it better. “You won’t see an ideological battle in Kuberaa. That said, you will find the two contrasting worlds quite glaring,” the Godavari maker analyzes, crediting the producers of the movie with supplying them with enough resources to mount it on a big scale. Suniel Narang and Puskur Ram Mohan Rao have bankrolled the Monsoon release.

Rashmika Mandanna‘s performance is outstanding, the director says. Jim Sarbh, a non-Telugu actor, learned even lengthy lines to give his best. The story unfolds in Mumbai. “The story needed that city to form the backdrop,” Kammula reveals.
