Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao, known for his versatility, will play the cricketing legend Sourav Ganguly in a biographical sports drama. The film will commence its shoot in January 2026.
The news has been confirmed by Ganguly first and Rao next. “Now that Dada (which means elder brother in Bengali) has already said it, let me also make it official – yes, I am playing him in his biopic,” the Hindi actor has said.
The film, which is yet to lock its title, is expected to be a December 2026 release.
Ganguly‘s fans are elated about the news. The iconic sportsman led the Indian cricket team to win the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy and reach the final of the 2003 Cricket World Cup, the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy and the 2004 Asia Cup. He was awarded the fourth highest Indian civilian award, Padma Shri, in 2004. He was elected as president of the BCCI in 2019.
Rajkummar Rao’s roles in films like Kai Po Che! (2013), Shahid (2013), and City Lights (2014) solidified his position as a serious actor. Aligarh (2016), Trapped (2016), Newton (2017), and Stree (2018) further cemented his stature.
