Daaku Maharaaj has been released in theatres this Sunday. If you are planning to watch the movie, read on our take on the mass action entertainer.
Story:
A civil engineer named Sitaram (Nandamuri Balakrishna) is forced to turn violent when faced with a ruthless mining baron. Powered by an army of a bunch of loyal soldiers, he must also save the life of a girl child named Vaishnavi. Will Sitaram, who had to turn into a mythical figure named Daaku Maharaaj, be able to overcome the threat of desperadoes and realize his mission?
Analysis:
A host of in-form talents have come together to deliver a dekko. Balakrishna has scored a hat-trick of hits in the post-pandemic era. Director Bobby Kolli’s previous film, starring Chiranjeevi (read Waltair Veerayya), was a stunning blockbuster. Producer S Naga Vamsi’s 2024 blockbusters include Tillu Square and Lucky Baskhar. Thaman’s most recent acclaimed work is Game Changer. From cinematographer Vijay Kartik Kannan (Rajinikanth’s Jailer fame) to the production designer Avinash Kolla (Dasara, Shyam Singha Roy, and many more), many behind-the-screen talents have spiked the appeal of this film.
Daaku Maharaaj is driven by its ambition as well as formula. Since Balakrishna is the hero, there are characteristic mass elements that shine forth. The action sequences (choreographed by V Venkat) are underlined by emotional ideas. Even when the hero is placed in familiar situations, his character’s sensibilities build an aura around them. The Akhanda actor channels more rage than what we saw in Bhagavanth Kesari. He looks ferocious like in Veera Simha Reddy and affable like a character from Simha.
Although a scene or two more involving Bobby Deol wouldn’t have harmed, the film makes a good use of the antagonist from Animal. Shraddha Srinath gets an unpredictable role, while Pragya Jaiswal is good. Sachin Khedekar (as the girl child’s grandfather), Chandini Chowdhary, Shine Tom Chacko, Makarand Deshpande, VTV Ganesh, Aadukalam Naren, actor-director Sandeep Raaj, Ravi Kishan, and Ravi Kale play different roles. Urvasi Rautela’s character could have been avoided.
Key highlights:
1. Balakrishna’s measured performance.
2. Thaman’s smooth background score that is rousing without being loud.
3. Emotional highs.
4. Decent action choreography.
5. Production values.
The film could have done with one or two unpredictable elements in the second half.
Verdict:
Daaku Maharaaj is tailor-made for those who love to watch action entertainers of the Balakrishna variety. It’s not about the plot. It’s about the Balakrishna genre.
