The humongous success of Sankranthiki Vasthunam has proven yet again that fun-filled entertainers are the toast of the season. In the last one and a half years, at least four other comedy-based movies have minted huge monies.
MAD, starring Sangeeth Shobhan, Narne Nithin and Ram Nithin in lead roles, was successful in October 2023. The rare college campus entertainer also featured Vishnu Oi and was directed by Kalyan Shankar. MAD Square, to be released later this year, is expected to become a bigger hit.
Tillu Square, which was released in March 2024, starring Siddhu Jonnalagadda and Anupama Parameswaran in lead roles. As a sequel, its box office success was always destined. The romantic crime comedy was directed by Mallik Ram.
AAY and Mathu Vadalara 2 followed that year. The former had Narne Nithin, Rajkumar Kasireddy, Ankith Koyya and Nayan Sarika in main roles. Like Tillu Square, Mathu Vadalara 2 was a sequel. Satya’s comedy fuelled its success.
This Sankranthi, Sankranthiki Vasthunnam has installed itself as one of the biggest Telugu-language blockbusters. The triple blockbuster is directed by Anil Ravipudi and is fronted by Venkatesh.
Interestingly, all the above major comedy hits are produced by big banners. Sithara Entertainments has produced MAD and Tillu Square. AAY is produced by GA2 Pictures. Mathu Vadalara 2 came from Mythri Movie Makers. Venkatesh’s movie came from Sri Venkateswara Creations.
