Bachhala Malli Telugu Movie Review Biopic of a scarred, troubled man

Bachhala Malli is produced by Razesh Danda and Balaji Gutta. The film is hitting the screens this Friday.

Story:

The story is primarily set in the 1990s and early 2000s in Tuni Mandal. Bachhala Malli (Allari Naresh), a laborer at a gunny sack firm, grapples with uncontrollable anger issues. He barely interacts with his loving mother (Rohini), is a compulsive drinker, and frequently picks fights with strangers. His troubled life stems from a traumatic childhood, marked by his father’s (Balagam Jayaram) abandonment of his mother to live with another woman. Malli’s life takes a turn when he falls in love with Kaveri (Amritha Aiyer), the daughter of a police officer with whom he has a tumultuous relationship. Will they find a happily-ever-after?

Analysis:

Allari Naresh looks the part. He is gloomy and edgy in keeping with his troubled, conflicted character. Malli barely smiles; as a key character puts it in a heartwarming scene, he has forgotten to laugh whole-heartedly. This characteristic shifts when Kaveri is around. Naresh brings out the spark he feels within when he falls in love with her. The sheer accident of bumping into her at a wedding, his sputtering conversations with her, and the arc of their love story add weight to the protagonist.

Balagam Jayaram, much like his onscreen wife, doesn’t talk much but relays the pain. Amritha Aiyer should have been written with more depth; her decisions should have been more moving. Viva Harsha and Prasad Behara have a limited screentime. Achyuth Kumar of Kantara fame is seen as Ganapathi Raju, a feudal lord who commands others. Ankith Koyya of AAY and Johar fame plays Malli’s half-brother. Rao Ramesh gets a well-etched character who shows emotional range. Hash Roshan of Mishan Impossible fame plays the childhood version of Malli.

Bachhala Malli is both plot-driven as well as character-based. The love story is integral to the destiny of the titular character. The Pushpa films touched upon the emotions and trauma felt by a child who comes from a broken family. The film under review is not an action drama like Pushpa 1 and Pushpa 2; that said, its protagonist’s psychological scars feel somewhat similar.

Writer-director Subbu Mangadevvi tells the story in a non-linear fashion. The story keeps moving back and forth from 1995 to 2005. Vishal Chandrasekhar’s Ade Nenu Asalu Lenu and Mari Antha Kopam are good.

Verdict:

Bachhala Malli is an emotional period romantic action drama.
