Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR) was born into a farming family and has contributed much to the Telugu cinema industry as an actor and producer. He was a self made actor and has grown into a great inspiration to many with his hard work in the industry. Often referred to amongst some of the great Indian actors that have put Telugu cinema high in the nation, ANR has earned several awards for the masterpiece films he has worked on, including an honorary Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1991, marking his name among the few Telugu celebrities to get the award. He acted in over 250 films over the course of his film career.
Besides acting in films, ANR played a prominent role in shifting the base of Telugu cinema from Madras to Hyderabad. He established Annapurna Studios, providing the necessary infrastructure to produce films in Hyderabad (then Andhra Pradesh State.) ANR also involved himself in several philanthropic endeavors, which included several scholarships. These have continued even after his demise. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri – listed among the highest civilian awards in the country, for his contributions to cinema.

This year is the birth centenary of Akkineni Nageswara Rao (born on September 20, 1924.) On this occasion, a statue of the legendary actor was unveiled at Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad by M. Venkaiah Naidu, the former Vice President of India. The Akkineni family members, including Nagarjuna, Amala, Naga Chaitanya, Akhil, Supriya, Sushanth, Sumanth, Naga Susheela and top celebrities from Tollywood, attended the ANR statue’s inaugural. S.S. Rajamouli, Mahesh Babu, Ram Charan, Nani, Vishnu Manchu, Mohan Babu Manchu, Nassar, Anupam Kher, Dil Raju, Brahmanandam, Ashwini Dutt and Rajendra Prasad have graced the occasion. ANR will be remembered as a legacy forever in the hearts of Tollywood audiences for his films.
