Telangana Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy today directed officials not to grant permissions for benefit shows in the State anymore. He took the drastic decision in the wake of a young woman breathing her last because of stampede outside a single-screen theatre in Hyderabad during a premiere show of ‘Pushpa 2‘ on Wednesday.
Benefit shows and premiere shows attract huge crowds despite hiked ticket rates. If crowd management measures are not taken, things go out of control.
There is a view that the Minister’s wording may be ambiguous. Full clarity is yet to be had. Not all early shows are benefit shows.
Sateesh Botta, the Executive Producer of ‘Virupaksha‘ and ‘Republic’, stated that crowd management is the solution, not outright bans. “This banning will not solve any problem. Uncontrolled crowds would be there for any early show, if not for benefit shows. The solution lies in strict enforcement of crowding rules. If a theatre’s seating capacity is 1,000, allowing double the capacity inside the premises would naturally result in stampedes,” he wrote on X.
