A small-time stand-up comic on a YouTube show has made fun of actress Deepika Padukone’s mental health issues, sparking a row. “Deepika Padukone also became a mother recently, right? Great, now she knows what depression really looks like (sic),” the comic said, courting controversy. The contestant added, “I am not trying to insult breakup-wala depression.”
Deepika’s fans are offended. They are asking the comedians out there not to make fun of mental health issues, adding that the Bollywood superstar heroine is among the most sincere champions of mental health.
Dr. Rimpy Sharma, under a viral video clip on X, commented, “People die because of depression. To laugh at someone because you think someone cooked a fake story shows how insensitive and uneducated this person is.” A wave of social media posts have sprung up in support of Deepika. “I think these women make it difficult for all women by underplaying everything we go through for male validation – our reproductive health, childbirth, break ups, mental health in general, post-partum depression, pressures of being a new mom,” wrote Sakshi Narula, a social media user.
This year, Deepika Padukone was seen in the Bollywood films Fighter and Singham Again. She played a major role in Kalki 2898 AD.
