Robinhood is produced on a prestigious scale by Mythri Movie Makers. Here is our review of the movie.
Story:
Ram (Nithiin), an orphan who grows up in an orphanage run by a good-natured man, becomes a modern-day Robinhood to fund its needs. He robs the wealthy and channels the proceeds to the needy. When police scrutiny intensifies, he temporarily halts his heists and takes up a job at an inept security agency. There, he is tasked with guarding Neera Vasudev (Sreeleela), an NRI who soon finds herself entangled in danger because of a drug lord (played by Devadatta Nage) in Rudrakonda.
Analysis:
The film comes from Venky Kudumula, the director Bheeshma. And there are quite a few similarities in how the stories of the two films were treated by him. The treatment is a mix of carefree heroism and stylish action filled with situational comedy involving mildly naive characters. In that respect, Robinhood is a Bheeshma twin.
But the similarities end there. Sreeleela comes from a rich family. She is not a spoilt brat but a low-intelligence person who believes that her entrepreneurial ‘innovations’ haven’t been duly rewarded. When she flies down to India for a brief period, the course of her life changes in unexpected ways because of a charismatic youngster and a cruel villain.
The lead performances are ably supported by Rajendra Prasad’s comedy and Vennela Kishore’s elaborate reactions. The latter plays the heroine’s over-confident sidekick who gets duped. The Nata Kireeti has a full-fledged role. The director makes the best use of their talents in a comedy track that is sustained well into the pre-climax stage. David Warner’s cameo is interesting.
The bad guys range from a factionist-like beast to a restless Home Minsiter (Aadukalam Naren) and a wild cop (Shine Tom Chacko). Mime Gopi is good in a negative role. Subhalekha Sudhakar, Keshav Deepak (as an official), and others are also seen. Dayanand Reddy and Sijju (as the heroine’s father) have roles.
The film stays true to the genre. While its Trailer made one believe that Nithiin’s Robinhood avatar would be a prolonged element, that’s not the case, though. The story acquires a new layer with the entry of the female protagonist. The Truth n’ Dare episode doesn’t feel like a filler scene.
GV Prakash Kumar’s background score adds a certain charm to the action sequences and the screen presence of Nithiin. Mythri Movie Makers keeps up its promise of dishing out one of the most expensive films in the genre.
Verdict:
Robinhood offers a blend of breezy heroism, stylish action, and enjoyable comedy, particularly from Rajendra Prasad and Vennela Kishore. While Nithiin and Sreeleela deliver engaging performances, the film is also grounded.
