In the upcoming movie 3 BHK, starring Siddharth and Sarathkumar as son and father, owing a house is the central theme. Incidentally, this is not the first movie to be made in world cinema with such a theme.
In The Pursuit of Happyness (2006), a struggling salesman’s quest for stability includes securing a home for his son, with housing central to his journey.
In The Money Pit (1986), a couple buys a dilapidated mansion, leading to comedic chaos as they struggle with endless repairs to make it their own. The beats of 3 BHK and The Money Pit are entirely different, though. 3 BHK is more an Indian story rooted in the lived realities of the Indian middle-class.
In 3 BHK, the theme of familial unity seems to be a highlight. In Home Alone (1990), a similar thread was seen. While not about ownership per se, the house is central as the protagonist’s family defends it from burglars.
In The Florida Project (2017), a mother and daughter live in a budget motel, with the dream of stable housing shaping their precarious existence. In 3 BHK, male characters are central.
3 BHK, written and directed by Sri Ganesh, is hitting the screens in Telugu and Tamil on July 4th.
