“Oscar For India” is currently the trending topic not only in India but also across the globe. This is just because of one movie that took India’s pride to the international stage but failed to do the same to the academy stage. Yes, we are talking about India’s most successful global film in the history of Indian cinema, and that is RRR, a film by SS Rajamouli, the master of commercial storytelling. RRR got international acclaim and many Hollywood filmmakers even expressed their opinions that RRR might get an Oscar nomination this time, ending the long wait for India since 2001. But that’s not what happened. RRR was not even sent by the Indian jury for the nominations for Oscar. Before discussing what might be the reasons, let us first talk about why India has been waiting so long, for around 21 years since 2001, for an Oscar nomination.
Looking at the history of nominations for Oscars from India, there are only three movies that have made it to the nominations in the category of best international feature so far. They are Mother India in 1957, Salaam Bombay in 1988, and Lagaan in 2001. Thereafter, there were no nominations again for an Oscar from India in this category. There were a couple of chances with The Lunchbox and The Disciple in the years 2013 and 2020, respectively, but the Indian jury just did not consider them for whatever reasons. It has been 21 years and this time, for the year 2022, RRR has been a very strong hope for all Indian film lovers that it might surely make it to the nominations. Many Hollywood filmmakers and critics agreed the same wholeheartedly. This was all because the film had already reached all the international platforms and the public. It has got all the craze and support. And so, it would be easy for RRR to give some tough competition at the Oscars to win the prestigious Academy Award in the category of best international feature.
Well, this year, the Indian jury went with a Gujarati movie, Last Film Show and submitted it for the nominations. Well, let us sincerely wish that the film will get some attention and give some competition in the nominations, while on the other hand, the hopes are still alive for RRR in other categories.
