Jersey is a movie based on cricket. The film revolves around the story of a mid-30s-aged cricketer who is striving to get into the Indian cricket team as per his son’s wish. Jersey is undoubtedly the best Telugu movie ever made on sports and the credit goes to the director, Gowtam Tinnanuri and the lead actor, Nani. Gowtam has penned a beautiful sports drama with a lot of emotions around, and Nani perfectly portrayed those emotions in the character of Arjun. Jersey has got national recognition and was even awarded as the best feature film of the year 2019 at the national awards. Jersey won the hearts of many millions in India and will remain as one of the best movies in Indian cinema forever.
Sye – Rugby:
Sye is the first Indian film set against the backdrop of rugby. SS Rajamouli, who is currently India’s top filmmaker, made this film in 2004. Sye is the third film by SS Rajamouli. Vijayendra Prasad, SS Rajamouli’s father, penned the script for the film. The film was set up by a rivalry between the two college groups and Ruby, which was the decision maker between them. Sye movie was a commercial success besides being an experiment made by SS Rajamouli of introducing an unknown sport to the Telugu people but still making it connected to them.
Thammudu – Kickboxing:
Thammudu is a trendsetting movie based on kickboxing, made in Telugu in the year 1999. The film stars Pawan Kalyan as the lead actor in the role of a kickboxing champion. The director, Arun Prasad, made the film as a package of sports, love, and emotions. The film was a huge hit at the box office and also became a trend among the youth to learn boxing, following their favourite actor, Pawan Kalyan. Thammudu paved the path for many sports movies in Telugu.
Guru – Boxing:
Guru is written and directed by Sudha Kongara. The film was a remake of the original Iruhi Suttru, made by the same director in Tamil. The film revolves around the sport of boxing. The film focuses on the dirty politics around the sports associations and perfectly presents them to the general audience. Guru was a blockbuster at the box office.
Bheemili Kabaddi Jattu – Kabaddi:
Bheemili Kabaddi Jattu revolves around a kabaddi tournament set up in Bheemili, a remote village in Visakhapatnam. Nani excelled in the film. The film was a remake of the original Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu. Even though the film has many debutants in both the cast and crew, including the director Tatineni Satya, it did great at the box office. The film even completed 100 days of its theatrical run in a few areas in Visakhapatnam and Uttarandhra.
A1 Express – Hockey:
A1 Express is a hockey-based film which focuses on corruption and nepotism in the sports field. Sundeep Kishan played the role of a national hockey champion and captain of the Indian hockey team. The film was a remake of the original Natpe Thunai in Tamil. The film also presents the spirit of the youth in the country to the general audience.
Golconda High School – Cricket:
Golconda High School is a movie based on the inter-school cricket championship and is inspired by the book “The Men Within”. The film was made so simply on a low budget but stood out as a blockbuster at the box office. With its underlying theme and message, the film was very well connected to teenagers and parents.
Ghani – Kickboxing:
Ghani stars Varun Tej in the film, playing the role of a professional kickboxer. The film revolves around the politics of sports. How Ghani turns as a professional kickboxer and wins the Indian boxing league is the narrative of the film. The film has a very huge star cast, including Upendra from Kannada and Suniel Shetty from Hindi. Varun Tej underwent an unbelievable transformation for the film.
Good Luck Sakhi – Shooting:
Good Luck Sakhi stars Keerthy Suresh in the titular role of Sakhi. The film is based on the sport of shooting. The film deals with the lead character overcoming her personal struggles and becoming a professional master by winning the national competition. The film was shot in some rural areas to convey to the audience that village athletes should be encouraged as well.
Liger – Mixed Martial Arts:
Liger stars Vijay Deverakonda in the titular role, who can be seen as an MMA international champion in the film. The film Liger is written and directed by the commercial director Puri Jagannadh.
