Tollywood, one of the leading movie industries in India as well as the world is known for the hundreds of movies it churns out every year. While most of Tollywood’s movies are based around romance, Tollywood also has a history of releasing movies based on sports. Venkatesh in Guru and Pawan Kalyan in Thammudu focused on Boxing, while Nani in Jersey focused on Cricket. Mahesh Babu in Okkadu focussed on Kabaddi and the Nithiin starrer Sye, focused on Rugby.
The year 2020 however promises to be a feast for moviegoers who love sports because there are four releases which are based on sports. We at Telugu Filmnagar have compiled a list of the most awaited Tollywood sports dramas to look out for in 2021.
1) Ghani
Varun Tej will be seen next in a sports drama titled Ghani. Varun Tej will be playing the role of a boxer in Ghani. The actor underwent a rigorous training schedule under the watchful eyes of boxer Tony Jeffries, an Olympic champion. Varun Tej had a punching bag installed at his home so he could continuously work on his boxing form. The action sequences in Ghani are being choreographed by Larnell Stovall, known for his works in theSnowfall, Baahubali 2, Max Steel and more. Ghani is slated to be released in movie theaters on July 30th, 2021.
2) Seetimaarr
Seetimaarr is helmed by Sampath Nandi and features Tamannaah Bhatia and Digangana Suryavanshi as the leading ladies while Gopichand is the lead actor. Touted to be a sports film, Seetimaarr will feature Gopichand in the role of a Hockey coach from Andhra Pradesh, who will have a face off with Tamannaah Bhatia’s character Jwala Reddy, the coach of the Telangana all girls Hockey team. Seetimaarr is slated to be released in movie theaters on April 2nd, 2021
3) Lakshya
Naga Shaurya will be seen next in an upcoming sports film titled Lakshya, which is touted to be one of the biggest sports films of 2020. Lakshya is helmed by Santosh Jagarlapudi and is based on the sport of Archery. According to the teaser, Naga Shaurya is lauded as a once in a generation talent in the field of archery. Naga Shaurya ends up being disgraced in the sport and spirals out of control while also grappling with his past. Lakshya tracks the journey of Naga Shaurya rising from the ashes like a phoenix to redeem himself.
4) Liger
Vijay Deverakonda’s next pan Indian film Liger, directed by Puri Jagannadh and costarring Bollywood diva Ananya Panday, is one of the most anticipated films. Liger will also mark the debut of Vijay Deverakonda in the Bollywood industry. Liger is a movie based on mixed martial arts, for which Vijay Deverakonda underwent intensive training. The movie is produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Puri Connects, a production house owned by Puri Jagannath and Charmme Kaur. Liger is slated to be released in movie theaters on September 9th, 2021
